A Welcome and Invitation from the Section Chair

The American Society for Qualityís (ASQ) North Carolina Foothills Section (Section 1129) welcomes you to their website! Section 1129 is an association serving those professionals in the Quality career fields who work in, and call home, the foothills of Western North Carolina. Nestled in the foothills of the Smokey Mountain Range, the section encompasses a region from Marion, NC in the west; to Statesville, NC in the east; from the Tennessee-Virginia border in the north; to Lincoln County, NC in the south. The region has a diverse economy that is represented by many industries. Traditionally, the region was once known for its national prominence in furniture and textile manufacturing. And while the furniture, furniture-related, and textile industries are still large and prominent employers in the region, the last twenty years have seen an increase in employment in many other industries. Most notably, companies in plastics and various metal-working industries that support the automotive sector have relocated to the region. There is also been a strong presence in the area of manufacturers of telecommunications cable.

Section 1129 was started in the late 1980s by ASQ members who were originally part of the Charlotte, NC section. Prior to the creation of Section 1129, many ASQ members traveled over sixty miles to attend the Charlotte Sectionís meetings. Interest in forming a local area section grew, and today, the Section 1129 has an ASQ membership of over 150 people. The section meets once per month from September through May (less December). Programs include dinner and speakers on a wide variety of subjects as well as plant tours of local manufacturing operations.

If you are a Quality Professional new to the area and would like to learn more about ASQ and the section, I invite you to attend one of our sectionís meetings as our guest. If itís a dinner meeting Ė dinner is on us! Just introduce yourself to one of the section officers at the meeting and let them know that you are new to the area or section and would like to learn more about ASQ and the section. If you canít join us for dinner, the speaker portion of the program is free of charge. Please join us! Key section leadership contacts and the calendar of events can be found on the other pages of this website. We look forward to meeting you and hope that you will join our professional association that is dedicated to the advancement of the Quality discipline and the professional development of its members.
